WAUKESHA — The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission celebrated World Environment Day on Monday by reminding people that this year's theme is Beat Plastic Pollution and encouraging southeastern Wisconsin residents to recycle their excess plastic bags, an attempt to address the excess of plastic wrap and bags that end up polluting landfills or floating around on the street.

World Environment Day is a United Nations outreach day that encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by non-governmental organizations, businesses and government entities around the world, according to its website.

The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission issued a reminder on Monday that the theme for this year's World Environment Day was #Beat-PlasticPollution and encouraged calls for global solutions to address plastic pollution globally and locally.

According to SWRPC, if you have plastic bags or plastic wrap that you can't reuse, you can often recycle them at stores or other dropoff sites if they are clean and dry.

The Bag and Film Recycling Drop-Off Directory provides a list of locations that accept plastic bags for recycling. However, due to ever-changing conditions, the organization advises residents to call and confirm a location's collection policies before visiting.

According to the United Nations Environment Program, the world produces around 400 million tons of plastic waste every year.
